Folk costumes from Estonia..

Date of Issue : 12 April 2013

Hi !

Here is a beautiful pair of stamps issued by Estonioan Post featuring folk costumes. The stamps are so  beautiful and could be included themes like costumes , Headdresses, culture, tourism etc.

SAAREMAA FOLK COSTUMES - KIHELKONNA AND KARJA

The new stamps from Estonian Post feature folk costumes from Kihelkonna in Western Saaremaa and from Karja in the North-eastern part of the island. The Karja stamp shows an elderly couple in long coats, dress worn around the middle of the 19th century as well as later, with red strings and coloured edges adding zing to the dark fabric. The man’s long coat is edged with a wide striped belt in many colours. Mittens were a necessary part of the attire and when there was no need to put them on, they were stuck in the belt. Men and women throughout Saaremaa invariably wore checkered kerchiefs – men round the neck and women on the head.

The man carries a tobacco pouch, while the woman’s pouch contains needles. The pouches were made of bits of coloured cloth. The woman wears one of the most peculiar Saaremaa headdresses – a round coloured cap, while the young married woman in the Maxicard wears a bonnet peculiar to the eastern part of the island. In Karja it could be either in geometric or floral design. Saaremaa bonnets all have a similar cut, but are still of a totally different appearance. The Kihelkonna woman featured in the postage stamp is shown in a tasselled bonnet general in Saaremaa, although it is different in the various parts of the island. A conspicuous feature, particularly for its shape, is the black crinkled skirt with a coloured lower rim. As for decorations there was a custom to wear several simple brooches one above the other. The First Day Cover shows how they were actually worn. The First Day postmark has a small motif from the Kihelkonna bonnet.

Jacques Chaban-Delmas Bridge, Bordeaux

image

The French Post issued a postage stamp featuring Jacques Chaban-Delmas Vertical-lift Bridge. It is EUROPE’S largest lift bridge,  opened in Bordeaux on 17 March 2013, with the Pont Jacques Chaban-Delmas spanning the River Garonne. The central lift span is 117m long and can be lifted vertically up to 53m to let tall ships pass underneath. One of the first ships to pass under it was the historic three-masted schooner Belem.

President Hollande inaugurated the €160 million bridge, which connects the Bastide district near the city’s wharves with Bacalan. He named it after the late Jacques Chaban-Delmas, who was mayor of Bordeaux for 48 years.

image

The bridge is 575m long with the central lift span weighing around 2,600 tonnes. Its width varies from 32 to 45m and it will be used by cars, trams, cyclists and pedestrians. It can handle 43,000 vehicles a day and will reduce traffic congestion in Bordeaux.

The construction of the project lasted three and a half years and employed about 900 people, the construction needed 43,000 m3 of concrete and 6,500 tons of structural steel.

The Jacques Chaban-Delmas vertical-lift bridge, creation of architect Thomas Lavigne, is one of the largest in Europe, with a length of 433 m and a height of 77 m. It can lift its central span with a pulley system in just 11 minutes.

Jacques Chaban-Delmas was a major figure of the Resistance, Mayor of Bordeaux, Prime Minister of Georges Pompidou and former President of the National Assembly. He died in 2000 at the age of 85.

Cherries on Stamps..

image

Croatian post Ltd. Mostar has issued two commemorative postage stamps featuring Cherry  (Prunus avium). Cherry is the fruit which  is loved and cherished  by one and all.

Cherry is known since the Bronze Age, and today is spread around the world in many varieties and variations. It blooms in early spring, at the same time as the new leaves. The fruits are developed from the white group of flowers that have long stems. It's sweet with pleasant aroma with a distinctive hard-shelled stone in the middle.

A number of medical properties were attributed to the cherry fruits, which until recently was considered a folk medicine. However, recent studies gave a scientific basis and confirmed curative properties of the cherry. They are a good source of vitamins, and the presence of antioxidants and other useful ingredients makes them extremely healthy fruit.

They help in cancer prevention, in hearth disease prevention; they relive pain caused by arthritis and gout, headache, alleviating symptoms associated with the diffuse disorder. Cherries help that our body produces melatonin in a safe and healthy way, and enhance the physiological and mental functions. Fresh cherries are good for reduction of physical and mental exhaustion and sour cherries improve mood.

Endangered animals on stamps..

image

Date of Issue : 2  November 2012

Gibraltar  Post issued a beautiful set of six stamps and a miniature sheet on 2 November 2012 featuring endangered animals.

image

The Arabian Oryx (Oryx leucoryx) is a medium-sized antelope with a distinct shoulder hump, long, straight horns, and a tufted tail. It is a bovid, the smallest member of Oryx genus, native to desert and steppe areas of the Arabian Peninsula. The Arabian oryx was extinct in the wild by the early 1970s, but was saved in zoos and private preserves and reintroduced into the wild starting in 1980. In 1986, the Arabian oryx was classified as endangered on the IUCN Red List, and in 2011, it was the first animal to receive Vulnerable status again after having been listed as extinct in the wild. It is listed in CITES Appendix I. As of 2011, populations were estimated at over 1000 individuals in the wild, and 6000 - 7000 individuals in captivity worldwide.

image

The Asian One-horned Rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis) belongs to the Rhinocerotidae family. Listed as a vulnerable species, the large mammal is primarily found in parts of north-eastern India and in protected areas in the Terai of Nepal, where populations are confined to the riverine grasslands in the foothills of the Himalayas. Typically weighing between 1,600 to 3,500 kg, it is the fourth largest land animal. The Indian rhinoceros once ranged throughout the entire stretch of the Indo-Gangetic Plain but excessive hunting reduced their natural habitat drastically. Today, about 3,000 rhinos live in the wild, 2,000 of which are found in India’s Assam alone.

image

The European Wolf (Canis lupus lupus) also known as the Eurasian Wolf is a subspecies of gray wolf which has the largest range among wolf subspecies and is the most common in Europe and Asia, ranging through Mongolia, China, Russia, Scandinavia, Western Europe, the Himalayan Mountains and north-western Turkey, on the Thracian Peninsula. Compared to their North American cousins, Eurasian wolves tend to have longer, more highly placed ears, narrower heads, more slender loins and coarser, tawnier coloured fur. Compared to Indian wolves, these wolves are larger with longer, broader skulls. In Europe, wolves rarely form large packs as their lives are more strongly influenced by human activities so they tend to be more adaptable than North American wolves in the face of human expansion.

image

The Iberian Lynx (Lynx pardinus), is is a critically endangered species of felid native to the Iberian Peninsula in Southern Europe. It is one of the most endangered cat species in the world. According to the conservation group SOS Lynx, if this species died out, it would be one of the few feline extinctions since the Smilodon 10,000 years ago. The species was formerly classified as a subspecies of the Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx), but is now considered a separate species. Both species occurred together in central Europe in the Pleistocene epoch, being separated by habitat choice. The Iberian lynx is believed to have evolved from Lynx issiodorensis.

image

The Snow Leopard (Panthera uncia) is is a moderately large cat native to the mountain ranges of Central Asia. They occupy alpine and subalpine areas generally 3,350 and 6,700 metres (10,990 and 22,000 ft) above sea level in Central Asia. The Snow Leopard Survival Strategy (McCarthy et al. 2003, Table II) compiled national snow leopard population estimates. Many of the estimates are acknowledged to be rough and out of date, but the total estimated population is 4,080–6,590. However, the global snow leopard effective population size (those likely to reproduce) is suspected to be fewer than 2,500 (50% of the total population, or 2,040–3,295).

image

The Western Lowland Gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) is is a subspecies of the western gorilla (Gorilla gorilla) that lives in montane, primary, and secondary forests and lowland swamps in central Africa in Angola, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea and Gabon. It is the gorilla usually found in zoos. Adult male Gorillas are prone to cardiomyopathy, a degenerative heart disease.
