Wonders of Malaysian Forest

Here  are some magnificent stamps from Malaysia on forest and wildlife. Pos Malaysia issued three miniature sheets featuring the wonderful Malaysian forest and its inhabitants. Malaysia is a wet, tropical country that is home to some of the world’s oldest rainforests and a variety of  wildlife species. Its forests spread from the coast right up to the mountains covering a vast area .

 

The country is separated into two major regions by the South China Sea. To the east is the Malay Peninsula, which extends southward from mainland Asia, and to the west is Malaysian Borneo, which includes the states of Sabah and Sarawak.

 

 

The Malay Peninsula is home to endangered elephants, tigers, gaur, tapirs, hornbills, and bearded pigs. Sabah and Sarawak shelter proboscis monkeys, Bulwer’s pheasants, endangered orangutans, red-banded langurs, clouded leopards, and populations of sun bears and sambar deer. Habitat for many of these species is shrinking, and unsustainable hunting also poses a serious threat to their survival.

National Parks of Finland

Nuuksio National Park

Finnish Post issued a stamp from the series “National Parks”. The current issue’s subject is the Nuuksio National Park, located in the southernmost part of Finland. Established in 1994, the park spreads over an area of forests and lakes in Espoo, Kirkkonummi and Vihti.

The name of the park is derived from the Nuuksio district of Espoo. Nuuksio can be reached by public transportation from Helsinki and Espoo. The Park comprises the westernmost part of the so-called Nuuksio lake highlands. Dozens of endangered or near threatened species of animals, plants and fungi are known to live in the area; for instance the Siberian Flying Squirrel, the European Nightjar and the Woodlark.

The stamp features the marvelous landscape of the Nuuksio National Park, as well as its location on the map of Finland marked with a red dot.

India Post released a set of 2 stamps and a Miniature Sheet featuring  the Wild Ass of Kutch and Ladakh on 10th May 2013. The Stamps show the Kiang of Ladakh and Ghor Khar of Kutch  with denomination of Rs.5 and Rs.20.

New stamp from Canada

Canada Post issued a stamp to commemorate 60th Anniversary of Her Majesty’s Coronation .

Queen Elizabeth II: 60th Anniversary of Her Majesty’s Coronation 

Princess Elizabeth became Queen on February 6, 1952, after the death of her father, King George VI, yet the Coronation didn’t occur until 16 months later.

Queen Elizabeth II was crowned on June 2, 1953, at Westminster Abbey, the setting for coronations for more than 900 years. The Queen, along with The Duke of Edinburgh, rode to the Abbey in the gold State Coach pulled by eight grey geldings. Her dress, designed by Norman Hartnell, was white satin embroidered with the emblems of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. She also wore the George IV State Diadem, which appears on many earlier stamps. During the ceremony, it was replaced with the solid gold St. Edward’s Crown, made in 1661.

The portrait featured on this stamp was painted by noted Canadian artist Philip James Richards on the occasion of Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee. Officially unveiled in London, U.K. on June 6, 2012, the portrait, which now hangs in Rideau Hall, contains details that represent Her Majesty’s ties with Canada. The Queen is shown wearing her Canadian honours, with her hand resting near a copy of the British North America Act, 1867. The flag behind establishes a red and white colour scheme that repeats in the flowers, medals and carpet. Through the archway behind Her Majesty stands a 1838 portrait of Queen Victoria in her coronation robes, a copy of which graces the Governor General’s residence.

Kingfisher

A new stamp issue by Poczta Polska from the Polish Birds series is dedicated to Common Kingfisher.The Common Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) also known as Eurasian Kingfisher or River Kingfisher, is a small kingfisher with seven subspecies recognized within its wide distribution across Eurasia and North Africa. It is resident in much of its range, but migrates from areas where rivers freeze in winter.

This sparrow-sized bird has the typical short-tailed, large-headed kingfisher profile; it has blue upper parts, orange under parts and a long bill. It feeds mainly on fish, caught by diving, and has special visual adaptions to enable it to see prey under water. The glossy white eggs are laid in a nest at the end of a burrow in a riverbank.

Stamp exhibition on Wildlife

 

A stamp exhibition “ Wildpex - 2013 ” on wild Life – Biodiversity was organized by PARITRI UPADHYAY & HETVI SHAH of Rajkot Philatelic society at Shri Shyama Prashad Art Gallery,  Rajkot. The Exhibition was inaugurated on 13^th April 2013 by Shri Govind Patel – Hon’ble Minister – Forest & Environment, Govt. of Gujarat.  Hon’ble PMG – Shri Ram Bharose  was the Chief Guest , Shri R N Maheshwari – Sr. Post Master GPO Rajkot , Prof. Anamik Shah of Saurashtra University, Shri. H C Mehta – noted philatelist of Gujarat were the Guests of Honor.

 

In  welcome speech, Ms.Paritri said that Postage stamps are not  just small pieces of paper  but they can tell the story of a particular topic. Stamps are the cultural ambassadors of  a country. Ms. Hetvi told that the main objective of the exhibition was to create awareness among local people, their families & particularly the school Children towards  Philately. She also said that wildlife unfolds rich heritage of flora & fauna and some of them are at the stage of serious threat.

The inauguration ceremony was witnessed by well attended audience, including invitees, and more prominently the  children from the various schools. While welcoming the guests she  stated the importance of philatelic exhibitions. 

There were more than 70 frames of exhibits mostly on Wild life Theme along with the display of PRIDE OF INDIA COLLECTION - Replica of 25 postage stamps on Gold.

A Work shop on Stamp collection; Power point presentation on Stamp collecting & News Clippings of Rainbow Stamp News were shown to School Children by Sanjay Rathod – President of RPS.

Closing ceremony was held on 15^th April 2013, by Dr.M G Maradia – Superintendent of Pradyuman Zoological Park, Rajkot. “The success is judged on the basis of how many visitors take the advantage of such philatelic exhibitions & we are happy that large number of visitors spent hours and enjoyed the exhibition.”- said Ms. Surbhi Rathod.

Cute Bush Babies from Australia..

 

This is the second in the Bush Babies stamp series by Australia post produced in co-ordination with the Perth Mint’s release of bush baby coins. Bush Babies II features five more young Australian animals – platypus, echidna, brush-tailed possum, kookaburra and wombat. The stamps capture the whimsy and character of these young Australian animals.

 

Scientists didn’t know what to make of the platypus when they first saw this strange animal that lives in water and on land, has a duck-like bill, a tail and short squat legs. The platypus is a monotreme – egg-laying mammal – and is protected in Australia.

Largely covered with strong pointed spines which protect it from predators, the echidna also has a long snout and sharp claws, both used in its search for food. The echidna shares with the platypus the rare distinction of being a monotreme – they are the only two in the world – and is protected in Australia.

A marsupial, the brush-tailed possum is the most common possum in Australia, found all long the east coast of the country. It is very active at night and sleeps most of the day.

The Wombat is among Australia’s favourite animals, and loves to forage at night on native grasses, shrubs and trees before returning to its burrow for the day.

The Kookaburra is the world’s largest kingfisher, and is best known for its rather hysterical laughing call. It is a meat-eater preying on lizards, snakes, insects, mice and other small birds.

New Butterfly species discovered…

 

Niue Blue Butterfly

Here is beautiful set of stamps and MS to be  issued by  Niue Post. . The stamps and MS feature recently discovered species of Butterfly which has been found only on the remote Pacific island of Niue. It is a great news for butterfly lovers. The two FDCs have  beautiful designs with a scientific touch !! These stamps are perfect for keen lovers of  butterflies.

The recent discovery of a new butterfly species on Niue has sparked excitement amongst the people of Niue and butterfly enthusiasts around the world. The recently discovered Niue Blue is the only endemic butterfly species found on the remote Pacific island of Niue.

This special butterfly was found on the island in 2009 by Australian Museum Research Associate Rob Lachlan. In 2012 he described the species from a pair of specimens and named it Nacaduba niueensis. As there is only a handful of plant and animal species that are unique to Niue, this new discovery has particular importance for the people of the island. In fact, the Premier of Niue has named the species Niue’s national butterfly.

To celebrate the exciting discovery of this new species, Niue is featuring the Niue Blue on a set of stamps The set of four gummed stamps features both the upperside and underside of the male and female of the species.

This rather small brown butterfly cannot be confused with any other species occurring on the island of Niue. The upper side is brown in both sexes, with a scattering of blue scales at the base of the wings in some female specimens, whilst the underside has an intricate pattern of wavy brown, dark brown and white lines.

A miniature sheet and two first day covers are also available, which complement the scientific style of the stamps. The first day covers zoom in on this unique butterfly, showing the distinctive markings on the butterfly’s wings.

Save The Tamaraw..

Hi !

Here are two beautiful stamps in vibrant colors issued by Philippines Post on “ Save the  Tamaraw ”, Project. Tamaraw is an endemic species of Mindoro island of Philippines. The stamps are beautiful and sure to be liked by  those collecting stamps on wildlife and endangered species !!

The Philippine Postal Corporation has issued a stamp featuring Far Eastern University’s “Save the Tamaraw” project.The Tamaraw (Bubalus Mindorensis) is a small and shy buffalo, also known as wild dwarf buffalo. They are endemic land mammals found only in the island of Mindoro, Philippines which has been tagged as the "Land of the Tamaraws".

It has a pair of relatively straight backward pointing horns which are extremely stout. Each horn is very wide and triangular at the base, compared to the domestic water buffalo or Carabao, the Tamaraw horns are set close together at the top of the head and grow in a “V” shape. They are endemic land mammals found only in the island of Mindoro, Philippines which has been tagged as the “Land of the Tamaraws”.

The Tamaraw is the mascot of every FEU athletic team. Since 2005 the students and faculty of FEU through its “Save the Tamaraw” project, has provided support for continual management and research-oriented program by participating in annual Tamaraw count held on April. FEU has additionally extended health and livelihood services for communities residing in and around the Iglit-Baco Range (an area near the Tamaraw habitat).

Stamp 1 design is an illustration of the Tamaraw in a simple picture, It is incorporated with an aggressive look which is inherent to the Tamaraw. The colors green and yellow symbolizes the FEU community.

While stamp 2 design shows a tamaraw in its natural setting at sunset. The dignified look on its face shows that it is a survivor no matter what happens. Like FEU as it celebrates its 85th year, continuous to achieve both in academics and sports, bravely facing anything that comes to them with fortitude, excellence and uprightness.

Canada Post took a peek inside nature's nursery with four definitives depicting young animals indigenous to Canada. The stamps feature baby woodchucks, porcupines, deer fawns and black bear. All four animals are native to Canada's forests and fields.The stamps are set on a background collage of the habitats of each animal in the issue.
