New stamp on Pierre de Coubertin..

image

Monaco Post has issued a stamp to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Pierre de Coubertin.

Pierre de Coubertin was born into an aristocratic family in Paris in 1863. He turned his back on the military career that had been mapped out for him, preferring the world of education. Influenced by the culture of the English-speaking world, he militated for the inclusion of sport in French schools. In 1894, he founded the International Olympic Committee to revive the Olympic Games. The first Games of the modern era took place two years later in Athens.

Sport for Peace – Paralympic Games 2012

UNPA

Date of Issue : 17 August 2012

The Paralympic Games are held every four years, following the Olympic Games, and are governed by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC). The Paralympics first started in 1948 when Dr. Ludwig Guttmann organized a sports competition at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in England for Second World War veterans that had spinal injuries. The competition took place between sports clubs and other hospitals on the same day as the Opening Ceremony of the London 1948 Olympic Games.

Para2

The first Paralympic Games were held in Rome, Italy, in 1960 and involved 400 athletes from 23 countries. Originally, only wheelchair athletes were invited to compete. Since that time, the Paralympic Games have grown dramatically. Athletes competing at the Games are divided into the following disability groups: visual impairments, amputees, cerebral palsy, spinal cord injuries and Les Autres - athletes with physical disabilities that are not included in the categories mentioned above.

The 2012 Paralympic Games will take place between 29 August and 9 September. They will be the biggest Paralympic Games ever, featuring 4,200 athletes from 160 countries who will compete in 20 sports.

para

To commemorate the 2012 Summer Paralympic Games, the United Nations Postal Administration will issue stamps on 17 August 2012 featuring six paralympic sports. Three souvenir sheets will also be released on the same day.

para3

Sport is a universal language that can be a powerful tool in promoting peace, tolerance and understanding by bringing people together across boundaries, cultures and religions. The 2012 Paralympic Games in London will continue its tradition of promoting the Olympic spirit by featuring exceptional athletes with amazing talents that continue to inspire people around the world.

clip_image002

The Stamps are getting so popular day by day , that they are all sold out at the Royal mail Post offices in the early working hours; one can seen the young and old waiting in queue's to have a complete set in their collection.

clip_image004

The most popular stamp being ‘The Women's Boxing Gold’ medal stamp - of Nicola Adams which is hard to find in the post office.Good initiative by the Royal Mail Post to boost Philately & felicitate the Olympians, but the face value of the stamps is high and with the price rise early this year makes it a tough buy for all to get the best.

Note: there are more Olympics stamps GB released over the year and a special minisheet on the Opening ceremony day. What a great gift and appreciation to the Olympians to have a Stamp each for a Golden Victory!!

During these Olympic Games, 10,500 athletes from 204 countries are struggling for 302 collections of medals in 26 Olympic sports.

The first Paralympic Games for physically handicapped sportsmen, mostly British soldiers - disabled people from WWII, were held on 29th July1948. It took place on the same day as the Opening Ceremony of the XIV Olympic Games. The Paralympic Games are coming back to its cradle with a wide-ranging schedule for more than 4,000 contestants from 166 countries who are participating in 21 disciplines.

Besides the traditional Olympic disciplines (light athletics, swimming, weightlifting, fencing, equestrian disciplines, cycling, rowing, yachting) or games (football, volleyball, basketball, rugby, tennis, table tennis),an extremely popular game of boccia or goalball has also been introduced.. It was devised after WWII as a ball game for visually impaired soldiers. It is played in silence and players try to throw a ball that has bells embedded in it into the opponent's goal. The players do not see the ball; they only hear it. But after the goal, the applause is a legitimate doping!

Stamps on ‘WORLD HERITAGE’

- Pradip Kumar Malik

HIGH COAST (SWEDEN)

The High Coast is located on the west shore of the Gulf of Bothnia, a northern extension of the Baltic Sea. The area covers 142,500 ha including a marine component of 80,000 ha, which includes a number of offshore islands. UNESCO designated High Coast as World Heritage property in 2000 for being an outstanding example representing major stages of Earth’s history.

image

Sweden 2005

Se-tenant set of four stamps, with views of the High Coast. In the lower selvedge, stamps are inscribed in Swedish "Världsarvet Höga Kusten" (World Heritage High Coast). The stamps are from a booklet pane of eight stamps, and are perforated on three sides.

The irregular topography of the region - a series of lakes, inlets and flat hills rising to 350 m - has been largely shaped by the combined processes of glaciations, glacial retreat and the emergence of new land from the sea. Since the last retreat of the ice from the High Coast 9,600 years ago, the uplift has been in the order of 285 m which is the highest known 'rebound'.

The High Coast site affords outstanding opportunities for the understanding of the important processes that formed the glaciated and land uplift areas of the Earth's surface. The site is one of the places in the world that is experiencing isostatic uplift as a result of deglaciation. Isostatic rebound is well-illustrated and the distinctiveness of the site is the extent of the total isostatic uplift which, at 294m, exceeds others.

LONDON (AP) — Britain is turning red into gold

Some of the country's iconic red mailboxes were painted gold Thursday, to celebrate gold medals won by British Olympians.

Champion cyclist Bradley Wiggins and rowers Helen Glover and Heather Stanning were honored with a gold mailbox in each of their hometowns, Royal Mail said.

It's the first time the mail service has changed the color of its mailboxes in more than a century. The boxes have been red since 1874.

The Royal Mail plans to paint another mail box gold every time a British Olympic or Paralympic athlete wins a gold medal during the London games. The pillar boxes will remain in use, and will stay gold for some time. The mail service did not specify when they will be repainted red.

It is also selling special gold medal stamps to celebrate all of the nation's champions. Stamps commemorating Wiggins, Glover and Stanning went on sale Thursday.
