New book on Philately…

PT1A

Collector's Guide to First Day Covers & Folders of India

With Set of Stamps, Se-tenant Stamps & Miniature Sheets

PT1 1 by Praful Thakkar

Nowadays, in philatelic fraternity, focus on modern Indian philately has gathered grounds. The subject of modern philately is a fascinating section which is capable to delight the collector’s eyes with various sizes, color shades, cancellation marks, legends and creative designs which have a religious, cultural, historical, political and commercial overtone. It has colors, creativity and charisma.  It has carved out an important niche in the hearts of new philatelists and collectors. This has happened because in last few years India Post has issued varieties of stamps, se-tenants, Miniature sheets, Sheetlets, Presentation Packs, FDCs and many more philatelic items which attracted the collectors in India and all over the world.

It is also observed that in recent times, a new category for FDC has been incorporated at all the levels of exhibitions. This shows that the charm and charisma of FDCs has been accepted and acknowledged. It is true that this is a modern subject which has huge philatelic potential.

Since 1947, approximately more than 2300 stamps must have been issued along with their respective FDCs and folders. It may be difficult to collect, preserve and present all of them. This Guide is an effort to narrow down the subject to substantial size without losing its collecting pleasure. This Catalogue is a showcase which gives  glimpses of FDCs of Set of Stamps, Se-tenant Stamps and Miniature Sheets which form the total of about 450 having equal number of Folders. Thus this theme has a small gamut and it can be managed easily.  Here, an effort is made to maximize the number of colored examples to give a creative and colorful dimension to this fascinating philatelic theme. In this Catalogue Valuation of various FDCs and folders is given to give a basic guideline to the collectors.

This book is an attempt  to present this subject with all its facets to cater the needs of collectors. Various checklists, illustrations and rare items are displayed in color so as to give an idea as to how the collection will look in totality. Pricing has also been done so that the collector in pursuing his missing items can get a guidance. They need right information, proper way of presentation and required items at a reasonable price. In short, they  require a touchstone to measure their efforts and to further improve their collection. This Guide will be able to satisfy all requirements of the collectors in particular and hobby in general.

Mr Mainak Kathiara, President Emeritus, Gujarat Philatelists' Association has rightly observed in his Welcome Message that " Perhaps once in a generation a book like 'Collector's Guide to First Day Covers & Folders of India with Set of Stamps, Se-tenant Stamps & Miniature Sheets' comes along. I would say it is a more than a book/catalogue, there is a living energy in it, one you would probably feel as you hold it & flip through the chapters. It has the power to create an experience in readers, and change their collections for the better.......

This is a first publication of its kind with pricing on FDCs & Folders with Set of Stamps, Se-tenants, Miniature Sheets and many more collectibles........I would like to tell the collectors that this is the 'future book' in Indian philately with the involvement of large number of philatelists........

If I were to sum up, the essence of the book 'Collector's Guide to First Day Covers & Folders of India with Set of Stamps, Se-tenant Stamps & Miniature Sheets' in one phrase,  it would be 'Present Moment Awareness'. "

The book will be available from Praful Thakkar, Ahmedabad pkthakkar@yahoo.com  or  in Mumbai INPEX 2013 Exhibition from Todywalla's Stall.

From Nov. 2– 4, 2012, Mainz – the city of the Man of the Millennium Johannes Gutenberg – is hosting an International Philatelic Literature Exhibition (IPHLA). It continues the reputed name of the well-known IPHLA, which under this label took place for the first time in Frankfurt-on-Main in 1989.

image

Exactly 150 years before 2012, the first German stamp album and the first philatelic catalogue were published in the city of Leipzig. These two print media of German philately opened an era that made stamp collecting a popular movement.

Gutenberg-Museum

Just like the two preceding literature exhibitions of 1989 in Frankfurt and 2007 in Leipzig, IPHLA 2012 Mainz will be an international meeting.

Gutenberg-Museum

IPHLA 2012 Mainz is being held in the generous and pleasant location of the remarkable city hall. The Gutenberg-Museum of the city of Mainz has been incorporated in the event as well.

The German Philatelic Federation BDPh e.V. is the host and invites all authors of study groups, small and big publishers, literature dealers and libraries to take part in this philatelic literature exhibition of 2012 as an exhibitor, dealer or sponsor.

Care for the Alzheimer' patient…

image

The Correo Argentino has issued a stamp to draw public attention to the Alzheimer's disease. Unfortunately, There is no cure for the disease, which worsens as it progresses, and eventually leads to death. Most often, it is diagnosed in people over 65 years of age, although the less-prevalent early-onset Alzheimer's can occur much earlier. In 2006, there were 26.6 million sufferers worldwide. Alzheimer's is predicted to affect 1 in 85 people globally by 2050.

The stamp calls not to leave people affected by the Alzheimer's disease alone with their trouble. Relative or companion should accompany, understand and support the sick person each day, as tells the slogan on the stamp.

Sub - Malpractices at Srinagar Philatelic Bureau

Dear Sir,
I want to draw your attention towards malpractices at Srinagar philatelic Bureau.

I had sent an EMO ref.no 149703120827003247 dated 27/08/2012 in favour of Senior Postmaster, Srinagan GPO for Rs. 1300 (One thousand Three hundred only).

I had requested to send me following items:-

Item No.  Item     Rate    Quantity Amount

62 Vashnodevi cover 20 2  40

73 Gandhi Booklet 30 3  90

74 Film fest cover 20 3  60

75 film fest cover 20 3  60

76 film fest cover 20 3  60

79 Film fest booklet         30 3  90

80 film fest cover 100 3 300

81 film fest cover 100 3 300

82 film fest cover 100 3 300

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Total                                 Rs. 1300

Very surprisingly, I got a packet from there which contain following items:-

Last 4 items-booklets--3 each-as per my requirment.

Total 40 nos. of covers.

But all those special covers I got were simple envelopes without stamp or postmark on them. Those were of no use for me.

ladakh3rd

Then I talked to the Postmaster, who asked me to return those blank spl covers.
I had sent those covers on 15th Sept 2012 by Speed post. After several reminders, they sent me 3 sets of Special covers with stamps and postmarks-but again wrong covers. All the 9 covers they postmarked as 15-06.2012.

ladakhcovers

They also sent me a stamp booklet issued on 2-10-2012, but stamps were affixed on wrong side.

I assume that postal staffs at Srinagar has no idea about spl. covers and booklets and whatever I paid was just a loss.
Please take care of such malpractices and do needful. Please arrange to send me correct items too.

Thanks
ASHOK

The Indian National Flag unfurled through Philately

By Sekhar Chakrabarti

Flag 2

author A new book by noted philatelist Mr Sekhar Chakrabarti, "The Indian National Flag unfurled through Philately" has just been published by Niyogi Books, New Delhi.

This book in the form of possibly the first and only authoritative book on the history of the Indian National flag, exposed through philatelic articles, till date.... This book is a must-read for those who are interested in Indian history and those who are curious about the Indian National flag, its background, development and true meaning...

For details Contact : Niyogi Publishers website : http://www.niyogibooks.com/

Prof Bharati Roy, Vice President, Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Govt of India says, "Sekhar Chakrabarti's innovative book "The Indian National Flag unfurled through Philately" tells us the fascinating history of the Indian flag through the medium of stamps. It is a fine blend of painstaking research and a dedicated pursuit of philately. The stamps reveal a visual message from the past and the text lucidly transports us through the process by which the Indian national flag had its birth. I congratulate the author for giving us this treasure of a book".
Prof. Dipak Ranjan Das, Former Professor & Head, Dept. of Ancient History & Culture, Calcutta University, Member: West Bengal Heritage Commission says;  “Mr Sekhar Chakrabarti, an acclaimed philatelist, has taken upon himself the challenging task of narrating the history of Indian flags from the days of yore, deriving information from an unconventional source. It is like the bow of Ulysses which could not be drawn by any weaker hand. He weaves the colourful history of Indian flags gathering data primarily from philatelic materials. The successful completion of this daring venture earns for Mr Chakrabarti a permanent niche in the world of historians engaged in vexillological research”.

Brief of PREFACE

It is one of the greatest mysteries I have ever encountered in my life! After all Philately is what? Is it an accumulation of a government product called stamps? Or it is collection of the pre-payment tokens for a service, i.e. the delivery of letters? Is it concerning a commodity or a commercial activity? Is it a pastime or a profession? Is it a hobby for the youth or is it a serious recreational pastime for the matured? Is it History or is it a research subject? Is it the world itself or a window to the world of culture and humanity? Is it a specialised trade or a new investment avenue for the investors? After all what is it? How can Philately be explained and defined properly? How should this great hobby be presented before others including the new-comers? Let us ponder over it once again.

Philately is a Serious Study. Philately is not just collecting stamps; it envisages a serious & deep study of the subject. Look at the Thematic Collections, how deep and far they go! The depth of study for the collection's subject is always commendable in awarded collections. In specialized or period collections it is more focused. Technical aspects of the specialized philatelic studies can match any technology expert's knowledge, in cases. paper quality, ink variety, printing processes and other similar aspects are treated very carefully in these collections.

Philately is a Niche' Investment Avenue. Of late, Philately has started to be recognized as a specialized investment avenue too. Investment advisors are actively suggesting additional investments in to it, with a view to diversify the portfolios of the Big Investors. Prices of classical stamps have been rising fast & constantly over last decades. Gandhi set of 1948, which I myself bought for Rs 100/- in late seventies is being quoted for Rs 45,000/- now. The recent example is of the My Stamp Sheetlets issued at the Indipex 2011 in February 2011. This set of 17 sheetlets is being quoted for Rs 20,000/- against the issue value of Rs 2,550/- . Stamps have proved a good investment if made judiciously.

Now what can we extract from all the above discussion? After all what is philately? Which word can explain all its traits?

After going through a number of dictionaries and thesauruses I fail to find a word which can define the Philately with all its qualities, except the word Philately itself !

So, what now? We surrender. Let the Philately be Philately. Nothing can explain it, but only our pure love & respect for this great hobby. Come; let us re-devote ourselves for it, for it has given us major portion of all our happiness & enjoyments. AMEN.

As usual, let us conclude with happy notes once again. Blessed by the good wishes of our learned readership the “Year Book of Indian Philately” has won a number of more awards. It started the year with a 'Bronze' at the 'INDIPEX 2011' at New Delhi in February 2011, followed by a 'Silver Bronze' at the 'NIPPON 2011' at Yokohama in Japan in August 2011 and a ‘Bronze’ at 'CHINA 2011' at Wuxi in China in November 2011. At home it has won a 'Silver' at the 'SINE 2011' at New Delhi in November 2011. We have surprisingly discovered that the Year Book has won a medal at every competitive exhibition, it has participated in!! We are reproducing here-in-after the score card of the Year Book of Indian Philately for an instant view. Is not this a delighting news? But this imposes a new set of duties too. We have to commit ourselves to higher standards to maintain this record, and…… WE DO.

You can expect a better outcome every next time. We are committed to this.

We trust to have the usual whole hearted support of our learned readership, all the ways; all the times.

Thanks.

Madan Middha
