Earth Hour : 23 March

 

Earth Hour is a worldwide event organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and held towards the end of March annually, encouraging households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights for one hour to raise awareness about the need to take action on climate change.

The event, conceived by WWF and Leo Burnett, first took place in 2007, when 2.2 million residents of Sydney participated by turning off all non-essential lights. Following Sydney's lead, many other cities around the world adopted the event in 2008. Earth Hour 2013 will be held today on March 23, 2013 from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. during participants' local time.

Monaco's government has developed mobility and quality travel solutions that respect the environment. The shuttle boat powered by solar electricity, for example, is far more than a simple gimmick for the tourists: it is integrated into the transport network operated by Monaco's bus company (Compagnie des Autobus de Monaco).

This is one concrete example of an ecological means of transport that reflects government policy. Monaco has been lending out electrically assisted bicycles since 2007. Today, there are eight stations dotted around the Principality.

World Energy Forum 22 –24 October 2012, Dubai

World Energy Forum is an International Not  – For - Profit Membership Organization which promotes cleaner and safer energy and sustainable development worldwide. The Organization was founded in 2008 by Professor Harold Hyun -Suk Oh, who heads the Organization as President and Chairman. Its Executive Director is Dr. Dinesh Kumar.

Dr. Harold Hyunsuk Oh,introduced his concept of a new smart energy movement citing the need for a new energy paradigm. The three-day event was held in Dubai from 22 to 24 October 2012  to boost the international cooperation and exchange of expertise to ensure safe and clean sustainable energy, which would achieve economic and social welfare for the people.

   

Its Goal & Objective:

• Promotes universal access to reliable and adequate supply of all forms of energy
• Facilitates sustainable energy policies that spur economic growth and global environmental protection
• Supports global collaboration on energy technologies to secure future energy supplies and improved energy efficiency, development and deployment of low carbon technologies
• Finds solutions to global energy challenges through technological engagement and dialogue

Dubai was selected to host this event after fierce competition from other international venues and cities. The World Energy Forum 2012 will take place for the first time outside of the United Nations Headquarters. The World Energy Forum chose Dubai as a venue to host this event because of Dubai's geographic and strategic location; its status as a global hub of finance, business, trade, energy, and tourism; and because of the political stability of the United Arab Emirates.

Emirates Post has issued a set of 4 commemorative stamps to mark the 50th WEF 2012 in addition to a distinctive Souvenir Sheet.

Sustainable Energy For All…

 

2012 INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF SUSTAINABLE ENERGY FOR ALL

The United Nation has designated 2012 as the ‘International Year of Sustainable Energy for All’ in order to increase awareness of the importance of addressing energy issues including the energy services for all, access to affordable energy, energy efficiency and the sustainability of energy sources and use; and for promotion of the internationally agreed development through sustainable and peaceful way. The year celebration combines these challenges with the goal of low pollution trying to meet the needs of the present without compromising those of future generations.

Sustainable energy is defined as "the energy produced and used in ways that support long-term human development in a social, economic and ecological scale." Therefore, sustainable energy for all is linked to a sustainable future for development and poverty alleviation.

     

The future of our nation depends upon the development of all. Students also have the important share and role in nation’s future. They are supposed to be the pillars of the nation. Thus their energy needs necessarily are important.

Postage stamps  are issued by different countries like Greifenberg, San Marino, Canada and Spain as part of this YEAR celebration to create and improve awareness about energy and its conservation. They give message with focus on use of endless natural sources such as wind and solar etc. The term "for all" is represented by the ability to produce energy in self-sufficient environment such as the lighted cabin using these natural resources.
