Day of Love and Friendship..

Valentine’s Day

image

14th February, the  Valentine's Day is the perfect day to show feelings. February 14 is also an ideal date to propose and even to get married.

Nothing matters more than love on Valentine’s Day. And nothing conveys love to your sweetheart better than a well-composed romantic letter. A beautiful love-letter has been known to win many hearts and seduce many souls. A powerful weapon in a lover’s arsenal, a love-letter is an indispensable part of Valentine’s Day celebrations.

The design for this year’s  Philippino stamp is a stylized drawing of a couple holding hands, wearing traditional Filipino costumes who profess their love for each other. The man hands in a bouquet of flowers while the woman holds a love letter.

Romance will never be lost . As long as there are people falling in love, love letters will always be written, cherished and enjoyed forever by the grateful recipient. These cards and letters sent through mail, are most of the time kept through the years for sentimental reasons.

Correos de Mexico issued a stamp to celebrate the coming St. Valentine’s Day, or Day of Love and Friendship, as this holiday is called in Mexico.

Language of stamps

Most Of Us Will Be Familiar With The Language Of Flowers. In Victorian Times Flowers Were Often Sent To Convey Messages. Even Today Roses Still Represent Love And White Flowers, A Sense Of Purity. However Few Will Be Aware Of The Language Of Stamps .Many Letters Posted In The Late Nineteenth And Early Twentieth Century Had Stamps Affixed To Envelopes And Picture Postcards In All Sorts Of Odd Positions And Angles.

The Position Of The Stamp On The Envelope Was Supposed To Relay A Message To The Receiver. I Imagine That People Who Lived On The Edge Of Society Found This A Convenient Way Of Expressing Their Feelings. I Wonder, Too, If Spies Or Criminals Had Stamp Languages Of Their Own…the Problem Of Postmarking The Stamps Placed On Various Parts Of The Envelope Finally Became So Great, That Postal Administrations Of The World Introduced Regulations Requiring The Sender Of Mail To Affix Stamps In The Upright Corner Of The Envelope. Collectors Of Postal History And Picture Postcards Should Be On The Look-out For Envelopes And Postcards With Stamps Affixed In Odd Positions, As They Could Well Form An Interesting Thematic/Topical Collection. Here Are Some Of The Interpretations Of The Stamp Language:

Stamp Positions & Meaning

Upside down, top left corner = I love you

Crosswise on top left corner = My heart is another’s

Centre of envelope, at top = Yes

Center of envelope, at bottom = No

Straight up and down, any position = Goodbye sweetheart

Upside down, top right corner = Write no more

At right angle, top right corner = Do you love me?

At right angle, top left corner = I hate you

Upright top right corner = I desire your friendship

Upright in line with surname = Accept my love

Upside down in line with surname = I am engaged

At right angle in line with the surname = I long to see you

Centred on right edge = Write immediately !

Hermes - Wholeheartedly stamps from France

The French Post has issued a block of stamps dedicated to the Saint Valentine day and featuring the "Wholeheartedly" design by Hermes.

Since 1937 the silk square 90x90 by Hermes is a symbol of creativity, refinement and know-how. Beyond seasons and collections, the Hermes square has always kept the style and quality requirements that made it famous. It owes its timeless character to many artists and illustrators. The designer Zoe Pauwels collaborates with Hermes since 1984. She drew several squares, including the "Wholeheartedly" design illustrated on this stamp.

It is covered with a multitude of small hearts, circling birds, shooting stars prolonged with long floating ribbons that fit inside a big heart. Two swans embody tenderness, love and fidelity. The whole square vibrates with flowers and light sounds by a secretly hidden lyre. This delicate instrument, invented by the god Hermes, is one of the poet Orpheus. This stamp issue has a philatelic singularity: this is the first time when stamps inserted in the block have five different visuals.

This elegant First Day Cover carries an affixed Sealed with Love stamp and a First Day of Issue color postmark.Evoking the romance of handwritten love letters, the stamp art depicts an envelope flap fastened with a red wax seal—a small heart inside a larger heart, surrounded by a delicate filigree circle. The Victorians were ardent letter writers and believed that there was a proper way to compose letters, particularly love letters. Etiquette manuals aided Victorian romantics in penning appropriate letters to their beloveds. While these books reflected the Victorian obsession with propriety, the senders still wished to make their feelings known, and there was a precise etiquette for using sealing wax. Although today red is the color most associated with passion, in the mid-1800s, blue was the color of love, with wax of various shades denoting the degree of emotion felt by the sender.

The Sealed with Love stamp is being issued as a Forever® stamp in self-adhesive sheets of 20. Forever stamps are always equal in value to the current First-Class Mail one-ounce rate.

Kaleidoscope Flowers on new USPS stamps

usps2

Date of Issue : 14 January 2013

Spring flowers, state flowers, wildflowers — these are but a few of the many botanical subjects on stamps issued by the U.S. Postal Service. Flowers are among the most popular subjects for collectors and the stamp-buying public. In a modern twist on a perennial favorite, the Kaleidoscope Flowers stamps combine the allure of flowers with the impact of modern computer graphics.

USPS

The set of four stamps depict the same contemporary flower drawing, with each stamp featuring one of four different color combinations: red and blue, green and purple, orange and violet, or pink and green. Some of the color combinations create the illusion that patterns recede or come forward, giving the stamps a dramatic visual appeal. The lines and curves of the drawing are reminiscent of a kaleidoscope flower—familiar, yet at the same time utterly distinctive.
