Sharjah 2012 : 28th Asian International Stamp Exhibition updates…

image

Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Sharjah Media Corporation, has opened the 28th Asian International Stamp Exhibition (Sharjah 2012), hosted by the Emirates Philatelic Association (EPA) at Mega Mall Sharjah.

image

The exhibition, held under the patronage of the Federation of Inter-Asian Philately (FIAP), boasts some 200 exhibitors and 30 dealers from 24 countries, and will run until November 25.

Michael Ho, FIAP coordinator for Sharjah 2012, said: "Philately in the GCC countries has been booming, with the standards becoming higher and higher. Promotion and education of philately to the local Arabic population is continuous as can be seen from the Sharjah 2011, the Second Sharjah Arabian Stamp Exhibition held in October 2011 and of course, this year's much anticipated Sharjah 2012. Through events like this, we are looking forward to a seeing the science go from strength to strength in the region.”

One of the highlights of Sharjah 2012 is that it provides an opportunity for young stamp collectors to make their mark in the ‘Youth Philately' class in the age categories 10-15 years, 16-18 years or 19-21 years.

Seasoned philatelists are also able to compete in 13 separate classes, including Traditional Philately, Postal History, Thematic Philately and Aerophilately, as well as the coveted FIAP Championship Class, which is only open to collections that have been awarded at least three large gold medals at exhibitions patronised by FIP/FIAP over the past 10 years. Awards, including large gold medals, gold medals, large vermeil medals, vermeil medals, large silver medals, silver medals, silver bronze medals, bronze medals and certificates of participation will be presented in each category.

The results from the first round of judging — which commenced two days prior to the opening of the show — have already been announced and the selection of Grand Prix candidates by the presidium will be held today.

The six-day event further boasts an exciting programme of activities and seminars. Those visiting the exhibition on Thursday can look forward to English language FIAP Philatelic seminars on ‘A simple and enjoyable way to form your first thematic exhibit' and ‘Understanding postal history and forming your postal history exhibit' and an Arabic language lecture on ‘How to prepare your exhibit', as well as a Philatelic auction.

Commenting on the exhibition, Laura Watts, Mega Mall General Manager, said: "We've been planning the event in conjunction with the Emirates Philatelic Association with the objective of creating an event that is interactive and educational and fun for all and, following the success of the opening ceremony we are excited to be welcoming visitors throughout the week.” – Khaleej Times

Emirate Philately Association exhibits rare stamps dating back to mid-nineteenth century

The Emirates Philately Association (EPA), the hosts for the 28th Asian International Stamp Exhibition being held in Sharjah, has a collection of exquisite and rare stamps, with some dating back to mid-nineteenth century depicting the history of postal services in old Arabia.

On the occasion, Abdulla Mohammed Tayyeb Khoory, president of the EPA, commented, "Stamp collection is a centuries' old hobby, and a very competitive one at that, indulged by kings and princes. Like books of history, stamps can accurately reflect the history, geography, political changes, and economy of the issuing country."

New Christmas stamps from Iceland

image

Issue Date: 1 November2012

Iceland Post issued a set of two stamps on 1stNov 2012 for this year’s Christmas.

The motifs for the 2012 Christmas stamps are based on the story of the Night Troll which is included in the Jón Árnason collection of Icelandic folk tales. The story as told by an old woman from Rangárþing was recorded in the 19th century. According to the story, persons who were responsible for looking after a certain farm in Iceland on Christmas night were either found dead or gone insane.

Once a peasant girl offered to stay at home on Christmas night. She sat in the communal sleeping room of the farmhouse singing to the child she was holding. That night a troll came to the window and started reciting verses in praise of the girl’s beauty. She answered immediately, reciting her own verses in return. At sunrise the troll disappeared from the window. The same morning a large rock was found in the farmyard, and it has been there ever since. The girl recounted the happenings of the night and it became clear that a night troll had appeared at the window and turned to stone at the dawn of day.

SIZE & DESIGNS OF FDC OF SAME STAMP DEFERS BUREAU TO BUREAU

- Sudhir Jain.

Godiji_FDC_1

Being Jainism theme collector, I was looking to collect FDC of Godiji Jain Temple stamp (issued on 17-4-2012) from all the Bureau of India. There are total 68 Philatelic Bureau in India. Out of these 68, I have collected FDC from 67 Bureau. Only one Bureau is missing that is Agartala Philatelic Bureau. I shall be glad if any Philatelist can help me in getting this Agartala Bureau FDC on attractive exchange / price.

Godiji_FDC_3

I have interestingly noticed that Bureau to Bureau size, design and even colors of the cancellations are different. Style of writing name of Bureau and date is also defer in most of the cases. Even FDC of two Bureau Port Blair and Muzaffarpur does not bear name of Bureau.

I am exhibiting here some of such FDCs.

Motilal Nehru

scan0010

Date of issue : 25 September 2012

India Post released a stamp of  Motilal Nehru on 25th September 2012 to celebrate his 150th Birth anniversary. Motilal Nehru (6 May 1861 – 6 February 1931) was a lawyer, an activist of the Indian National Movement and an important leader of the Indian National Congress, who also served as the Congress President twice.

: Mansoor B.- Mangalore - Blog :  http://mbstamps.blogspot.in/

This stamp should have been issued by India Post on 6 May, on his birthday !!

NEW DELHI: Launching the commemoration of 150th birth anniversary of Motilal Nehru, President Mr Pranab Mukherjee today said institutions evolved by leaders like him should be strengthened instead of being destroyed.
Paying rich tributes to Motilal, he listed his achievements like his role in evolving of Public Accounts Committee and protecting independence of Legislature from the influence of the Executive by establishing a separate cadre for the Central Legislative Assembly, now Parliament.

Nehru report

Motilal Nehru chaired the famous Nehru Commission in 1928, that was a counter to the all-British Simon Commission. Nehru Report, the first constitution written by Indians only, conceived a dominion status for India within the Empire, akin to Australia, New Zealand and Canada. It was endorsed by the Congress Party, but rejected by more radical Indians who sought complete independence, and by many Muslims who didn't feel their interests, concerns and rights were properly represented.
