Earth Hour..

 

Earth Hour : 23 March

 

Earth Hour is a worldwide event organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and held towards the end of March annually, encouraging households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights for one hour to raise awareness about the need to take action on climate change.

The event, conceived by WWF and Leo Burnett, first took place in 2007, when 2.2 million residents of Sydney participated by turning off all non-essential lights. Following Sydney's lead, many other cities around the world adopted the event in 2008. Earth Hour 2013 will be held today on March 23, 2013 from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. during participants' local time.

Tributes to Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri

2nd October, the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi is celebrated all over the world as International Day of Non – Violence . 2nd October is also the birth anniversary of great Indian Leader and former Prime Minister, Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri. This Post is a philatelic tribute to these  great Indian leaders.

First British stamp on Gandhi

In 1969 Royal Mail released the first British stamp to commemorate Mahatma Gandhi and the stamp was the  first to be designed by an  Indian artist, Biman Mullick. The stamp celebrated the birth centenary of Indian independence leader Mahatma Gandhi.

The designer of the stamp was Biman Mullick an Indian graphic designer and illustrator then teaching at the Folkestone School of Arts and Crafts. Mullick’s design was simple but effective, showing Gandhi in front of the Indian flag. “The design brief gave complete freedom to the designers,” Mullick said. “Mahatma Gandhi maintained an extremely simple life style. This was a lead for me. I set out to achieve stark simplicity in this design.”

Lal Bahadur Shastri (2 October 1904 – 11 January 1966) was the second Prime Minister of   India and a leader of the Indian National Congress party. Shastri as Prime Minister continued Nehru's policies of non-alignment and socialism. He became a national hero following the Indo-Pakistan War of 1965. The war was formally ended in the Tashkent Agreement of 10 January 1966; he died the following day, still in Tashkent, of a heart attack.

New Stamp from India

 

Motilal Nehru

Date of issue : 25 September 2012

India Post released a stamp of  Motilal Nehru on 25th September 2012 to celebrate his 150th Birth anniversary. Motilal Nehru (6 May 1861 – 6 February 1931) was a lawyer, an activist of the Indian National Movement and an important leader of the Indian National Congress, who also served as the Congress President twice.

This stamp should have been issued by India Post on 6 May, on his birthday !!

NEW DELHI: Launching the commemoration of 150th birth anniversary of Motilal Nehru, President Mr Pranab Mukherjee today said institutions evolved by leaders like him should be strengthened instead of being destroyed.
Paying rich tributes to Motilal, he listed his achievements like his role in evolving of Public Accounts Committee and protecting independence of Legislature from the influence of the Executive by establishing a separate cadre for the Central Legislative Assembly, now Parliament.

Nehru report

Motilal Nehru chaired the famous Nehru Commission in 1928, that was a counter to the all-British Simon Commission. Nehru Report, the first constitution written by Indians only, conceived a dominion status for India within the Empire, akin to Australia, New Zealand and Canada. It was endorsed by the Congress Party, but rejected by more radical Indians who sought complete independence, and by many Muslims who didn't feel their interests, concerns and rights were properly represented.
